World Oral Health Day is celebrated on the 20th of March every year and is a global event. The primary objectives of this day are to raise awareness about oral diseases, how to enhance or maintain oral health, and why it is necessary to maintain good oral health. This day also aims to encourage good and preventive oral care, promote healthy habits, and emphasize the importance of regular dental visits.

The theme for this year is โ€œA happy mouth is a happy life,โ€ which highlights the fundamental role good oral health plays at every stage of life in ensuring a healthy, happy, and quality life.

Organized by the staff of the Dental Department, the celebration of World Oral Health Day at ERRH, Mongar was graced by the Nursing Superintendent as the Chief Guest, along with the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, HODs, in-charges, and staff from different departments. The celebration began with the offering of butter lamps and Zhabten for the continued good health and long life of His Majesty the King, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and a short opening remark by Dr. Ugyen Phuntsho on the importance of celebrating World Oral Health Day.

The Nursing Superintendent highlighted the significance of celebrating such a day and encouraged all participants to take care of their own oral health. The HOD of the Dental Department, Dr. Chandra Dutt Rai, also stressed the need to visit the dentist regularly, as most oral diseases are preventable.

A presentation on basic oral health instructions was delivered by Dr. Ugyen. He highlighted how good oral health is linked to good general health, mental well-being, and, ultimately, quality of life. He also emphasized that while tooth brushing (at least twice a day) remains the gold standard for maintaining oral health, choosing the correct toothbrush and toothpaste also matters.

Additionally, he stressed why regular flossing, the use of antibacterial mouth rinses, maintaining a healthy diet, and visiting the dentist regularly should complement tooth brushing. Demonstrations of brushing and flossing techniques were also performed.

In conclusion, Dr. Ugyen urged all participants to promise and commit to taking charge of their own oral health, as well as that of their families and children, so that everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy, happy, and quality life.
